3 Inches of Blood - Sect of the White Worm EP (2001)

The Canadian metal band 3 Inches of Blood formed in 2000 in Vancouver, initially performing with only Jamie Hooper on vocals, before the addition of Cam Pipes. Pipes was initially asked to add a some vocals to the band's already recorded demo EP and was welcomed as a permanent member after the results proved to the band's liking.
Their debut album 'Battlecry Under a Winter Sun' was recorded in 2002 on the Teenage Rampage label. This release went by almost unnoticed until the band's UK distribution label decided to put them on as a support slot for a tour with platinum rock band The Darkness. This exposure gained them much critical attention and acclaim in the world of underground metal, and they were signed up by big-label subsidiary Roadrunner Records in 2004.
In 2004, original drummer Geoff Trawick and bassist brother Rich left the band. Matt Wood of Vancouver doom/sludge/noise band Goatsblood, and Brian Redman replaced them. Original guitarists, Sunny Dhak and Bobby Froese left the band shortly after recording in around July of 2004. They were replaced by Justin Hagberg and Shane Clark. Roadrunner put out an advertising blitz, and the track 'Deadly Sinners' from the band's sophomore release 'Advance and Vanquish' appeared on numerous sampler CDs, compilations and even a video game (Tony Hawk's Underground 2) creating a huge press hype for the band that caused their popularity to skyrocket, with a slot on 2005's Road Rage tour gaining them many new fans.
The bands over-the-top lyrical style and high-pitched, Rob Halford-esque vocals, combined with their appearance in official photos, which owes more to modern pop punk fashion and clothing labels such as Atticus, have lead some to dub them as a parody of the classic heavy metal acts they claim to seek to give tribute to. When questioned on this, vocalist Cam Pipes gave the following statement: "Just because we're a bunch of young guys singing about the greatness of heavy metal doesn't mean we're some joke band." Interestingly, when performing live, the band dresses far more in the manner you would expect of a heavy metal band (see Heavy Metal fashion). This is most likely down to the individual choice of the new band members that have joined 3 Inches of Blood on tour, none of whom appeared in the promo photos for Advance and Vanquish.
The band has occasionally (and erroneously) been labelled as a metalcore band. In fact, the band draws far more influence from pre-1985 heavy metal such as Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and other members of the N.W.O.B.H.M. In fact, one of the main tenets of the band's philosophy is that of a reaction to the contemporary popularity of genres such as nu-metal, metalcore and screamo. It is ironic then, that the label to which they are signed is one of the biggest for these genres. This is probably best summed-up in the words of vocalist, Jamie Hooper:
"We're kind of in a weird position, considering the more modern leaning line-up of that label," says Hooper. "We're nu-metal's greatest enemies, so it's a weird juxtaposition for us. But let's just say that we fit in very well with their back catalogue - Annihilator, Pestilence, King Diamond, Suffocation. We're very pleased to be a part of that."
There is often confusion over which of the band's two vocalists performs each style of singing: Cam Pipes sings in falsetto style and Jamie Hooper provides the metalcore-style screams.

Bad Religion - New live performance + 2 new songs (2007)

A brand new Bad Religion show from last week - showcasing two new tracks from 'New Maps of Hell'; 'Honest Goodbye' and 'Heroes & Martyrs'. These two tracks are also included in the download in studio versions - released by Epitaph.
"With the crowd now suitably amped, one of the most anticipated bands of the day, Bad Religion, made its way onstage as Linkin Park's Chester Bennington and other artists took a side-stage vantage point to watch. Among their catalog of hits, the Bad boys treated the fiesta-goers to the new single 'Honest Goodbye', off July 10's 'New Maps of Hell'. Scoring points for timeliness, the band also cranked out 'Los Angeles Is Burning', calling to mind the actual L.A. wildfires from earlier this month."

New York Dolls - 1st & 2nd Demo (1972)

The New York Dolls are a rock band formed in New York City in 1971. In 2004 the band reformed with three of their original members, two of whom, David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain, continue on today and released a new album in 2006.
The band found little commercial success during their existence, but the New York Dolls prefigured much of what was to come in the punk rock era and even later; the Dolls' over-the-top crossdressing influenced the look of many new wave and glam metal groups, and their shambling, sloppy but highly energetic playing style set the tone for many later rock and roll bands.
Initially, the group was comprised of singer David Johansen, guitarists Johnny Thunders and Rick Rivets (who was replaced by Sylvain Sylvain after a few months), bass guitarist Arthur "Killer" Kane and drummer Billy Murcia. The original lineup's first performance was on Christmas Eve 1971 at a homeless shelter, the infamous Endicott Hotel.
They got their big break when Rod Stewart invited them to open for him at a London concert. Shortly thereafter, Murcia died of accidental suffocation (after he passed out from drugs and alcohol, groupies put him in a cold bath and forced coffee down his throat). He was succeeded by Jerry Nolan, a friend of the band's, though future Richard Hell and Ramones drummer Marc Bell (Marky Ramone) later claimed he auditioned to take Murcia's place: "Only two people showed up to audition, me and Jerry. They gave it to him because I was doing all the fancy fills."
The band was influenced by vintage rhythm and blues, the early Rolling Stones, classic American girl group songs, and anarchic post-psychedelic bands such as the MC5 and the Stooges, as well as then-current glam rockers such as Marc Bolan. They did it their own way, creating something which critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote "doesn't really sound like anything that came before it. It's hard rock with a self-conscious wit, a celebration of camp and kitsch that retains a menacing, malevolent edge."
Morrissey organized a reunion of the three surviving band members (Johansen, Sylvain, and Kane) for the Meltdown Festival in 2004. It was extremely well-received, producing a live LP and DVD on Morrissey's Attack label, and a film, New York Doll, showing Kane's point of view of the genesis of the reunion contrasted against the backdrop of his conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. However, future plans were affected when the news came of Arthur Kane's unexpected death on July 13, 2004 from leukemia.
In July 2005, it was announced the two surviving members would tour and produce a new album, titled One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This. Released on July 25, 2006 the album features guitarist Steve Conte, bassist Sami Yaffa (formerly of Hanoi Rocks), drummer Brian Delaney and keyboardist Brian Koonin.

King Diamond - New song available for free download

A brand new King Diamond song, entitled 'Never Ending Hill', is available for free download at the Download Punk website. The track comes off the group's long-awaited new album, 'Give Me Your Soul... Please', which will be released in North America on June 26 via Metal Blade Records. Massacre Records will issue the album in Germany on June 29.
Revolver magazine recently reported that King Diamond's new album was inspired by a painting called 'My Mother's Eyes' which the band's distributor in Denmark stumbled across while surfing the net (and which Diamond has since bought for the new CD cover).
The more Diamond looked at the image of a battered blond girl with blood covering her white dress, holding out palms affixed with protruding eyeballs, the more it captivated and inspired him. 'I can feel the energy of the front cover in all the songs we wrote, and it will definitely affect my lyrics,' he promised.
King Diamond guitarist Andy La Rocque recently returned home to Sweden after 'a very heavy and intense mixing session' in Dallas, Texas with King Diamond on 'Give Me Your Soul... Please'. 'It's definitely the best songs and production we've had in years!' Andy told 'A rollercoaster of atmospheres and horror is a good way of describing' the new CD.

Don Bajema, Lydia Lunch, Hubert Selby Jr. & Henry Rollins - Our Fathers Who Aren't In Heaven (1990)

Out of print compilation of spoken word bits from Don Bajema, Lydia Lunch, Hubert Selby Jr. and Henry Rollins. Released on Lydia Lunch's Widowspeak label back in 1990.
The two main Henry Rollins bits can be found on the album Human Butt, the other two appear in written form in his books. But the combination of Rollins, Bajema, Lunch and the great Hubert Selby Jr. makes this a compilation well worth downloading - and/or buying from eBay or Gemm.

Henry Rollins - Eric the Pilot (1999)

Next up in my campaign to spread the gospel of Henry Rollins is the album Eric the Pilot, recorded in Australia in 1997 - released on 21361 in 1999.
This will probably be the only officially released spoken word album by Rollins that I'll upload, since it's out of print and hard to come by.
"Hilarious and engaging as usual, this release from Rollins is a one-hour story of his adventures with a slightly off-kilter pilot and adventures in the Midwest of America. Like all of his other spoken word releases, it is honest and funny. Definitely for fans of the man's work; it will also entertain anyone who likes a little subversive humor (and doesn't mind profanity)."

The Up - Killer Up! 1969-1972 (1995)

The legendary White Panthers garage band from Detroit!
This rare anthology of The Up features all their studio recordings, plus live material and extensive liner notes. Killer Up! also includes one song by poet Allen Ginsberg, from the split 7" released for the John Sinclair Freedom Rally of 1971. Produced by John Sinclair.

Exerpts from the liner notes:
"It's common to name the MC5 and the Stooges among the forefathers of what they call "punk rock," but it was their associates in a third band, the Up, who could more accurately be identified as the real precursors of punk. In fact, if you trace the punk-rock lineage back to the Ramones-and many do the connection- is even clearer, because the Ramones were really little more than a watered-down, cheapened clone of the once-mighty Up of Detroit and Ann Arbor".
"This determined quartet of "killer skinnies from the Murder City" were not as skilled in music and stagecraft as their stablemates in the MC5, nor as charismatic as their colleague Jim Osterberg (Iggy Pop) and his band The Stooges, but they dedicated every fiber of their being to playing high-energy rock n' roll that was designed to inspire their audiences to leave the square world behind and come and join the revolution".
"The Up were formed in the spring of 1967 by Franklin Bach (ne Frank Dedenbach), a denizen of Detroit's east side who had attended University of Detroit High School on the west side, enrolled at Wayne State University, and dropped out of college soon after becoming stage manager and announcer at the newly-opened Grande (that's "Grand-ee") Ballroom in October 1966, when the MC5 was its "house band" by virtue of the band's almost weekly appearances there from opening night on". "In Ann Arbor the Up replaced Vic Peraino with drummer Scott Bailey and continued to roll under the guidance of my brother David. We hooked up with my friend Jimmy Silver, who became associated with Trans-Love Production when we started managing a daring local group known as The Psychedelic Stooges. As with The Up, the MC5-the most popular of the three units-extended every effort to assist The Stooges in gaining an audience and, whenever possible, featured one or both bands on its own shows".
"By the spring of 1969 the MC5 had become a national recording act and the Stooges joined them soon after, but The Up continued to toil in the local rock & roll vineyards without ever securing a national recording contract. The Up issued a 45 single, Just Like An Aborigine b/w Hassan I Sabbah, on SunDance Records in 1970, and the 'A' side of another single Free John Now (b/w Prayer For John Sinclair by Allen Ginsberg) on Rainbow Records in December 1971, but no more of their music was to see the light of day until the issue of this album in 1995".
"The material finally released here includes both issued singles (including the Allen Ginsberg B-side of Free John Now, a 45 released and passed out free at the John Sinclair Freedom Rally at the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor on December 10, 1971); a completely finished version of the Earl King/Jimi Hendrix tune Come On (Let the Good Times Roll) with additional lyrics by Frank Bach; several songs from a recording session at the Head Sound Studios in Ypsilanti, Michigan, found in a tape box dated only "1970-71"; and some tunes recorded "live" at the Agora Ballroom in Columbus, Ohio on a typical early 70s night in the Upper Midwest September 26, 1972".

The Up: Frank Bach (Lead Vocals), Bob Rasmussen (Electric Guitar), Gary Rasmussen (Electric Bass), Scott Bailey (Drums).

Gary Rasmussen later resurfaced in Sonic's Rendezvous Band.

Metallica - Solnahallen, Stockholm, Sweden 26.09.1986

Cliff Burton's last concert in Solnahallen, Stockholm, Sweden in 1986 - and the last "real" Metallica show - after this it all went downhill for the band!
"Clifford Lee Burton (February 10, 1962 – September 27, 1986) was a bass guitarist, best known for his work with the heavy metal band Metallica from 1982-86.
Burton's early influence was essential in creating the unique musical style for which Metallica would later become famous. An angry, working-class sound, characterized by a driving bassline, stylised lead and powerful rhythm guitar, the band would be seen as innovators of heavy metal music through much of the late 80s and early 90s.
Burton was born on February 10, 1962 in Castro Valley, California to Jan and Ray Burton. He was raised in the San Francisco Bay bay area by his parents. Burton began playing the bass at age 13, and would practice up to 6 hours per day. His early influences varied from Classical music to Southern rock.
Upon graduating from Castro Valley High School in 1980, Burton studied music at Napa Valley Junior College in northern California. One of his fellow schoolmates was "Big" Jim Martin, former guitarist of Faith No More, with whom Burton would jam. Burton joined his first band, Trauma, in 1982.
In 1982, Trauma travelled to Los Angeles to perform at the Whisky a Go Go. Among those in attendance were James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, both members of Metallica. After hearing Burton play his famous solo "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth", they asked him to replace departed bassist Ron McGovney, and since he felt that Trauma was "...starting to get a little commercial", he agreed. But the idea of having to move to Los Angeles did not sit well with him. Burton managed to convince the band to relocate from Los Angeles to the San Francisco Bay Area.
During the European part of the Master of Puppets tour, the band had complained that the sleeping cubicles on their tour bus were unsatisfactory and uncomfortable. As a minor solution the members would draw cards for the most comfortable bunk. On the evening of September 27, 1986 Burton had won the game with an ace of spades. He was sound asleep when the band's tour bus encountered a patch of black ice, skidded off of the road, and flipped over on the grass in Ljungby Municipality, rural Sweden. Burton fell through the window of the emergency exit door and was killed instantly when the bus landed on top of him.
Burton's body was cremated, and his ashes were scattered on the Maxwell Ranch. At the ceremony, the instrumental "Orion" from the album Master of Puppets was played. Subsequently, Metallica did not perform this song again until June 6, 2006 (when they performed the album in its entirety to mark the 20th anniversary of its release)".

David Allan Coe - 18 X-Rated Hits (1990)

18 X-Rated Hits is a selection of some of David Allan Coe's finest adult themed work - only available through his website.
"David Allan Coe (born David Alan Coe on September 6, 1939 in Akron, Ohio) is an American outlaw country music singer who achieved his greatest popularity in the 1970s. He has written and performed over 280 original songs throughout his long career. As a songwriter, one of his best-known compositions is Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone), originally recorded by Tanya Tucker.
Known for his outlaw persona, Coe reputedly spent most of his youth in various prisons until releasing his debut album, Penitentiary Blues, in 1968 and after touring with Grand Funk Railroad, he joined Danny Sheridan's notorious Eli Radish Band. His concerts were wild and unpredictable, as Coe began calling himself the Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy and he wore a rhinestone costume and Lone Ranger mask, riding into concerts on a motorcycle.
Coe has been lionized since the 1980s by punk rock artists. Dead Kennedys covered Take This Job and Shove It on their final studio album Bedtime for Democracy in 1987, while GG Allin transformed Coe's Longhaired Redneck into his own Outlaw Scumfuc on his 1988 album Freaks, Faggots, Drunks and Junkies.
In 1999, Coe met and befriended Pantera/Damageplan members and brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul. Starting in 1999 and finishing in 2003; the trio, along with Pantera bassist Rex Brown, recorded a project titled Rebel Meets Rebel. The album was released on Vinnie Paul's record label Big Vin Records on May 2, 2006".

Black Sabbath - Live At Hammersmith Odeon (2007)

"Together for a short but memorable time - a trio of studio albums, a couple of tours, and countless thundering riffs - the second coming of Black Sabbath began in 1979 when founding members Tony Iommi and Terry "Geezer" Butler were joined by Ronnie James Dio. The former singer of Elf (and later Rainbow and Dio) added his fiery, demonic howl to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group's crushing mix of iconic riffs, gloomy grooves and doom-soaked imagery.
In late 2006 Dio, Iommi and Butler, joined by drummer Vinny Appice, reunited to record three new songs for Rhino Records' era-spanning collection The Dio Years. These recording sessions went so well that the quartet - billed as Heaven and Hell - launched a highly anticipated world tour in the spring of 2007.
Released just weeks after The Dio Years, this single-disc Rhino Handmade edition of the original double LP, Live At Hammersmith Odeon, features Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice getting hot one December night in London during Sabbath's 1981 tour for Mob Rules. Previously unreleased, the concert spotlights Sabbath as they storm through 14 of the Dio-era's best, including Neon Knights, Heaven And Hell, Children of the Sea" and Country Girl. The band also performs several pre-Dio classics including Paranoid, Children of the Grave and a white-hot version of War Pigs.
Live At Hammersmith Odeon is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 5,000 copies".

It took some time, but here's another Henry Rollins spoken word show for your enjoyment!
Back in January 2005 my older brother and I traveled to Stockholm, Sweden to witness the pure genius that is Henry Rollins.
This is (hopefully) the only hard evidence of that trip - a fantastic spoken word show featuring Hank speaking for well over three hours. Recorded on a portable minidisc player - not the best quality recording, but far from the worst.
It's great fun, and well worth downloading!

Bad Religion - Live At the Hollywood Palladium, 01.02.1991

Here's another classic Bad Religion concert - this time from the Hollywood Palladium, February 1st 1991. A great show with tracks from the fabulous albums How Could Hell Be Any Worse, Suffer, No Control, Generator and Against the Grain.
"Out of all of the Southern Californian hardcore punk bands of the early '80s, Bad Religion stayed around the longest. For over a decade, they retained their underground credibility without turning out a series of indistinguishable records that all sound the same. Instead, the band refined their attack, adding inflections of psychedelia, heavy metal, and hard rock along the way, as well as a considerable dose of melody. Between their 1982 debut and their first major-label record, 1993's Recipe for Hate, Bad Religion stayed vital in the hardcore community by tightening their musical execution and keeping their lyrics complex and righteously angry.
Bad Religion formed in the northern suburbs of Los Angeles in 1980, comprising guitarist Brett Gurewitz, vocalist Greg Graffin, bassist Jay Bentley, and drummer Jay Ziskrout. Gurewitz established his own record company, Epitaph, to release the band's records. Between their self-titled EP and their first full-length record, Pete Finestone replaced Ziskrout as the group's drummer. Into the Unknown, their debut album, was released in 1983 and gained them some attention on the national U.S. hardcore scene. After its release, the group's lineup changed, as bassist Paul Dedona and drummer Davy Goldman joined the group.
In the meantime, the band's lineup was undergoing some more shakeups. Gurewitz had to take 1984 off to recover from various substance abuse problems, leaving Graffin as the band's only original member. In addition to Graffin, the 1984 incarnation of the band featured former Circle Jerks guitarist Greg Hetson, bassist Tim Gallegos, and returning drummer Pete Finestone. Bad Religion's next release, the harder, punkier Back to the Known EP restored faith among the group's devoted fans. After its release, the group went on hiatus for three years.
When Bad Religion returned in 1987, the band featured Gurewitz, Graffin, Bentley, Hetson, and Finestone. They released Suffer the following year, a record that re-established the group as prominent players in the U.S. underground punk/hardcore scene. They followed with No Control (1989) and Against the Grain (1990)".
