The Beatles is one of the most influential bands of rock music, and in the genre of heavy metal, there are few as highly revered as Metallica. Like a crazy edition of Marvel's "What If?" comic, Beatallica takes the beautiful songs of The Beatles, changes the lyrics and mixes them with the never-ending thrash of Metallica."

"Beatallica is a parodic band that plays music made from combinations of songs of The Beatles and Metallica. A Beatallica song is typically a blend of a Beatles song and a Metallica song with a related title (e.g. "The Thing That Should Not Let It Be", combining The Beatles' "Let It Be" and Metallica's "The Thing That Should Not Be"), though sometimes just a Beatles song will be used as a basis with modified lyrics. The lyrics slip back and forth between the two songs—occasionally neither in lieu of original lyrics comically referencing Metallica, heavy metal music or the heavy metal community—while the scansion and melody are usually Beatles-based, the music is played metal style with some Metallica riffs and solos thrown in.
The project was founded in 2001 by singer Jaymz Lennfield and original guitarist Krk Hammetson. The EP A Garage Dayz Nite was recorded for the annual "Spoof Fest" concert held in Milwaukee, as a memento of that year's concert. A few dozen copies of the EP were handed out to friends. Later that year, one of those CDs made its way to Milwaukee resident David Dixon, who created a web page that included mp3s of the songs and named the band "Beatallica". The band was unaware of the webpage until Dixon finally met them in the summer of 2002, carrying a stack of fan emails from all around the world. Beatallica gave the webpage its blessings, and after further urgings from its internet fanbase, recorded the EP Beatallica, also known as The Grey Album, releasing it online on April 1, 2004.
Later in 2004, the band (now including bassist Kliff McBurtney and drummer Ringo Larz) started to perform at live venues, with a stage show incorporating elements from both Beatles and Metallica performances. They also played as an opening act for Dream Theater; Mike Portnoy even joined the band on stage for drums on one occasion. Beatallica would go on to open for the likes of Motorhead and play summer festivals including Milwaukee's Summerfest and Germany's Earthshaker Festival.
In 2007, the band's current lineup of Jaymz Lennfield (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Grg Hammetson (Lead Guitar), Kliff McBurtney (Bass, Backing Vocals) and Ringo Larz (Drums) went into the studio to record all new versions of their songs for their official debut "Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band".
To avoid legal problems, the band maintained a strict non-commercial policy (all songs are available for free download) and shrouded themselves in anonymity (all names mentioned above are of course stage names, but their real names were revealed in interviews, and hence also appear in this article). Metallica are aware of the spoof band's existence and have so far not threatened to take any legal action; Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett have all publicly stated that they enjoy Beatallica's music.
On February 17, 2005, a cease-and-desist notice was sent to Beatallica by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, a company which holds rights to most of the Beatles catalogue. The notice states that the "music", "news" and "merchandise" sections of the official Beatallica website constitute a copyright violation and should therefore be taken down. In response to this, a petition requesting Sony/ATV Music Publishing to retract its threat of legal action was created. The band was saved from further legal action by Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich, who offered to provide assistance with legal negotiations and also asked Metallica's longtime attorney to try to defuse the situation with Sony. Ultimately, Sony decided not to pursue legal action against Beatallica. Sony ultimately reached an agreement with Beatallica and their new label Oglio Records, and an official Beatallica recording will be released in July, 2007 entitled "Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band"."

After our little rendezvous with SqueezeBox Teddy there's only one logical place to go - The World's Worst Records, Volume 1 and 2 from Rhino. Released on cassette in the 80's.
'There is perverse pleasure to be had in sampling the tasteless, inept, and bizarre, and it was with this fact in mind that Rhino Records unleashed The Rhino Brothers Present the World's Worst Records!, a compilation of abrasive novelty songs, demented outsider artists, and clumsy comedy. With liner notes by Dr. Demento and Rhino mainstays Barnes & Barnes and Wild Man Fischer on board, there's not much doubt as to the tone of the collection. The set list is skewed strongly toward silly, self-consciously dumb parody tunes that range from amusing (Ogden Edsl's wacky child-abuse singalong "Kinko the Clown") to obvious and unfunny ("I Wanna Be Your Dog" sung by some bad Three Stooges imitators). Should the "World's Worst Records" include songs like these that were specifically designed for such a list? For those who think not, there's the psychobilly classic "Paralyzed," a formless, atonal jumble of guitar, drum, and bugle from the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, a genuine eccentric who actually turned this wild, incredibly alive record into a hit for a short while in 1968. The highlight of the set is the brilliantly dumb "Surfin' Tragedy," recorded in 1963 by the Breakers; this priceless hybrid of surf pop and the "teen tragedy" tradition sets a romantic tale of death on the waves to a ham-fisted Beach Boys-style ballad, complete with a mournful French horn hook. Gloria Balsam's proudly off-key "Fluffy" is sure to clear the room at your next family reunion, and with the original single long out of print, its appearance is valuable (to a select few). Also welcome are classic novelties from the wrestling-obsessed Novas and the taste-impaired Jimmy Cross, though their numbers are easily available on several other compilations. Toward the end of the 20th century, the interest in records that ignore or reject the popular standards of what constitutes "good" music grew into a recognizable cult (writer Irwin Chusid explored the new genre with Songs in the Key of Z: The Curious Universe of Outsider Music). Blame it on the age of irony, or a desperate attempt to find unique sounds in an increasingly homogenous world, but there are those who find pleasure in the accidental, the broken, and the incorrect. The Rhino Brothers Present the World's Worst Records! anticipated this trend several years in advance, proposing that "bad" was infinitely better than "boring," though their overdependence on prefab wackiness lessens the importance of the package'.

Teddy the German - Teddy Forever (1992)

Teddy the German aka. SqueezeBox Teddy - or just Teddy - is a German hobo who does 'fantastic' and tasteless versions of popular tunes such as 'Sloop John B', 'The Rose' and '500 Miles'.
It's hard to find any understandable info on the old guy - since it's all written in German. But apparently he's homeless by choice, and makes a living playing in various locations and releasing over-the-top CD's like this one. Give Teddy a chance!

Roky Erickson - Mad Dog & The Holiday Inn Tapes

"Roky Erickson (born Roger Kynard Erickson on July 15, 1947) is an American singer, songwriter, harmonica player and guitarist from Texas. He was a founding member of the 13th Floor Elevators.
One of rock and roll's most famous cult figures and burnouts, Erickson is perhaps as well-known for his mental illness as for his musical talents.
Erickson cofounded the 13th Floor Elevators in 1965. He was the chief songwriter along with Tommy Hall.
In 1966, the band released The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. Psychedelic Sounds had the band's only charting single, "You're Gonna Miss Me". The single remains probably Erickson's best-known work; critic Mark Deming writes that "If Roky Erickson had vanished from the face of the earth after the 13th Floor Elevators released their epochal debut single, 'You're Gonna Miss Me,' in early 1966, in all likelihood he'd still be regarded as a legend among garage rock fanatics for his primal vocal wailing and feral harmonica work.
The Elevators were vocal proponents of LSD and marijuana use, and were subject to strong attention from police. In 1969, Erickson was arrested for possession of one marijuana joint in Austin, Texas. Facing a ten year prison term, Erickson pled insanity, which proved to be a mistake. He was sent to the Rusk State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, where he was subjected to electroconvulsive therapy and Thorazine treatments and held until 1972.
When released from the state hospital, Erickson's mental outlook had changed. In 1974, he formed a new band which he called Bleib Alien, Bleib being an anagram of Bible and/or German for Stay, and "Alien" being a pun on the German word "Allein" ("alone") - the phrase in German therefore being "Remain alone". His new band exchanged the psychedelic sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators for a more heavy metal sound that featured lyrics on old horror film and science fiction themes. "Two Headed Dog" (produced by The Sir Douglas Quintet's Doug Sahm) was released as a single.
The new band renamed itself Roky Erickson and the Aliens. In 1979, Erickson recorded some of his new material with Stu Cook, formerly of Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1981, Roky and the Aliens released The Evil One, an album of his material on horror movie themes. In 1982, Erickson asserted that a martian had inhabited his body. He was arrested in the 1980s on charges of mail theft (Erickson took unclaimed mail from the halfway house where he lived, and taped it to the walls of his room. He insisted that he never opened any of the mail, and the charges were ultimately dropped).
In 1995, Erickson released All That May Do My Rhyme on Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey's label Trance Syndicate Records. Produced by Texas Tornado bassist Speedy Sparks, Austin recording legend Stuart Sullivan and Texas Music Office director Casey Monahan, the release coincided with the publication of Openers II, a complete collection of Erickson's lyrics. Published by Henry Rollins's 2.13.61 Publications, it was compiled and edited by Casey Monahan with assistance from Rollins and Erickson's youngest brother Sumner Erickson, a classical tuba player.
Sumner was granted legal custody of Roky in 2001, and established a legal trust to aid his brother. As a result, Roky received some of the most effective medical and legal aid of his life, the latter useful in helping sort out the complicated tangle of contracts which had reduced royalty payments to all but nothing for his recorded works.
In September 2005, Erickson performed his first full-length concert in 20 years at the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival with The Explosives.
A documentary film on the life of Roky Erickson titled You're Gonna Miss Me has been recently made by director Keven McAlester.
In the Dec. 30, 2005 issue of the Austin Chronicle, an alternative weekly newspaper in Austin, Texas, Margaret Moser brings up to date the story of Roky's recovery with the aid of his brother Sumner. According to the article, Roky played at 11 gigs in Austin in 2005, has obtained a drivers license, owns a car (a Volvo), voted the previous year, and planned to do more concerts with The Explosives in 2006. In 2007, Roky played his first ever gigs in New York City, as well as California's Coachella Festival".

Mad Dog (1992): Compilation of Roky Erickson's band and solo projects from 1976-1982, with The Aliens and The Explosives. The quality isn't very good, but this album is hard to find - bad is better than not having it at all.

Rage Against the Machine - Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival 2007

“Good evening,” Zack de la Rocha said on Sunday night, looking out at the 50,000 or so people gathered in front of Coachella’s main stage. “We are Rage Against the Machine, from Los Angeles, California.” With that, guitarist Tom Morello –- wearing a baseball band emblazoned with the word “Unite” — kicked into the winding riff of “Testify,” beginning Rage’s first concert in seven years. De La Rocha rapped with so much force that his microphone distorted as he enunciated every word of the lyrics, which were written about the first Gulf War but sounded eerily current: “Baghdad is burning… The war is right outside your door!”
During the final pre-encore song, “Wake Up,” de la Rocha finally spoke to the crowd at length, spitting a furious political rant that began by suggesting that every U.S. president should have been hung for war crimes. “This current administration is no exception –- they should be hung and tried and shot,” he said, during the song’s breakdown. “But the challenges we face go beyond the current administration… It’s not a system that changes every four years.. It’s a system we have to tear down, generation after generation.” The band moved back into the main riff, while de la Rocha screamed “Wake up!”

The Runaways - The Runaways (1976)

The Runaways were a teenage, American all-girl band who performed heavy metal, rock and roll and punk rock in the 1970s. They are best known for the songs 'Cherry Bomb', 'Queens of Noise', 'Neon Angels (On the Road to Ruin)' and 'Born to Be Bad'.
The band toured through America and Japan, also visiting the UK, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and toured Japan. The career of the band was short (1975-1979), successful, and tempestuous.

"The '70s teenage band The Runaways has a new gig. Producers Art and John Linson will be bringing their rough and tumble coming-of-age story to the bigscreen in Neon Angels. Floria Sigismondi, who directed videos for David Bowie, The White Stripes and Marilyn Manson, will write and direct the drama about girls brought together by Kim Fowley, creating a band that would set the stage for girl groups like The Go-Go's and The Bangles.
The Linsons secured music rights and deals that allow them to tell the stories of members Joan Jett, Cherie Currie and the late Sandy West. An unpublished memoir written by lead singer Curie will be used as a resource for a drama that intends to bare all the drugs, sex and heartache experienced by girls who struggled to be viewed as musicians, not sex kittens with guitars.
"We certainly utilized to our advantage our image as teenage girls who wore titillating clothes," Jett told Daily Variety. "But we also became an excellent band and made it OK for girls to play rock 'n' roll. It got hard once people focused more on what we were wearing than what we were playing."
The group fared better in countries like England, Japan and Scandinavia, and broke up in 1979. Jett went on to solo success.
"Looking back, I loved that period of my life," she said. "Growing up, my fantasy was to play in a rock band, become famous and make a hit record."
Art Linson said the film will be financed independently, which he did recently on the Sean Penn-directed "Into the Wild" and the Robert De Niro starrer "What Just Happened?" That will allow "Neon Angel" to be R-rated and edgy, factors that were important to Jett and Curie.
Jett will be exec producer, along with her longtime manager-producer Kenny Laguna and Brian Young".

Unlike so many other punk bands who have been together for years Bad Religion has held onto their original sound and playing style; an energetic and simple, but also well-played, tight and melodious sound which has won the group a growing following and helped them make even bigger inroads into the public consciousness with their 8th album - "Recipe For Hate" in 1993.
