The Ruts - The Crack (1979)

The Ruts were a reggae-influenced British punk rock band, notable for the 1979 Top 10 hit "Babylon's Burning", and an earlier single "In a Rut", which was not a hit but was much played and highly regarded by the UK BBC Radio 1 disc jockey, John Peel.
The band consisted of Malcolm Owen (vocals), Paul Fox (guitar), John "Segs" Jennings (bass) and Dave Ruffy (drums). As part of the People Unite collective based in Southall in West London the band were active in anti-racist causes, and their song "Jah War" is about the Special Patrol Group's violence in Southall in 1979, in which Blair Peach was beaten to death and Clarence Baker was severely injured.
The Ruts backed Laurel Aitken who was then signed to the Secret Affair record label, I-Spy Records on a John Peel session for BBC Radio 1, in April/May 1980, and also backed Aitken on his support tour to Secret Affair - The line-up was Aitken, Fox, Jennings, Ruffy, Owen and Barnacle.
Malcolm Owen died from a heroin overdose on 14 July 1980 at the age of 26. The b-side "H-eyes" of "In a Rut" was a song against heroin use, and two other songs, "Dope for Guns" from the album The Crack, plus "Love in Vain" (b-side of "Staring at the Rude Boys") were also anti-drug songs.
On 16 July 2007 the band reformed for the first time in 27 years and played a special one off benefit gig for Paul Fox, following his diagnosis with lung cancer. Henry Rollins (of Black Flag), stood in for Owen. They were supported by Tom Robinson, The Damned, Misty in Roots, U.K. Subs, Splodge (Splodgenessabounds), John Otway; and the Peafish House Band which featured Lee Harris, (The Blockheads), Tony Barber (Buzzcocks) and Rowland Rivron, plus Edward Tudor-Pole and T. V. Smith.
Fox, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer in mid 2007, died on 21 October of the same year at the age of 56.
"The Crack" is The Ruts first album, released in 1979 and containing the UK hit singles: "Babylon's Burning" (No. 7 in the UK chart in June 1979) and "Something That I Said" (No. 29 in September 1979) The white-reggae-ish "Jah War" which was written in the aftermath of the Southall unrest and the over-use of force by the Metropolitan Police Service's Special Patrol Group in 1979 was also released as a single but didn't make the UK chart.

Henry Rollins - Harmony In My Head

Every Tuesday the alternative icon that is Henry Rollins let's it rip on live radio - and every week Angela over at the Rollins Archive posts the show for you and me to download.
"On May 17, 2004, Rollins began hosting a weekly radio show, Harmony in My Head on Los Angeles' Indie 103.1 radio. The show aired every Monday evening, with Rollins playing a variety of music ranging from early rock and jump blues to hard rock, blues rock, folk rock, punk rock, metal and rockabilly, but also touching on rap, jazz, world music, reggae, classical music and more. Harmony In My Head often emphasizes B-sides, live bootlegs and other rarities, and nearly every episode has featured a song by British group The Fall.
Rollins put the show on a short hiatus to undertake a spoken-word tour in early 2005. Rollins posted playlists and commentary on-line; these lists were expanded with more information and published in book form as Fanatic! through 2.13.61 in November 2005. In late 2005, Rollins announced the show's return and began the first episode by playing the show's namesake Buzzcocks song. As of 2008, the show continues each week despite Rollins' constant touring with new pre-recorded shows between live broadcasts".

Henry Rollins - Moore Theatre, Seattle, Washington 31.10.2007

When I first start I'm hard to stop... Here's another new spoken word show by Henry Rollins! This time at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, Washington on Halloween, October 31st this year. This show has way better quality than the previous two, but the first 30 seconds are missing - no big deal. Enjoy!
A big thanks to Angela for pointing me in the direction of these new shows!

Henry Rollins - Keswick Theater, Glenside, Pennsylvania 06.10.2007

As a quick follow up to my Rollins post earlier today - here's a spoken word show from the Keswick Theater in Glenside, Pennsylvania on October 6th this year. This show is both longer and of better quality than the one posted earlier, but don't expect to be blown away by some high fidelity recording - I would rate it as a good C+. As I stated in my previous post Hank will be taking his Provoked tour overseas in 2008 - starting in Gothenburg, Sweden January 14th. You can see his tour plans HERE.

Henry Rollins - The Canal Club, Richmond, Virginia 29.09.2007

It's been a looong time since I've posted any Rollins spoken word shows, but here's a new one from The Canal Club in Richmond, Virginia on September 29th 2007. His ongoing Provoked tour will also take him back over to us good folks in Europe early next year.
The sound quailty on this one is pretty bad, but it's absolutely listenable.

HelloHenry.com

On one of my trips to the fabulous Rollins Archive I stumbled across a link to this weird but enjoyable new Henry Rollins tribute site - HelloHenry.com:
"A web blog dedicated to all the crazy funny things found online relating to Henry Rollins and his fans. Vids, pics, stories, comics, from the down right weird through to the moderately amusing. HelloHenry.com brings you a daily dose of Hank humor for your viewing and listening pleasure".

Hank's official site also has a new feature you don't wanna miss - the highly entertaining Clip of the Month, where Heidi May gives us her best shot at dismantling the aging alternative icon that is Henry Rollins.

Henry Rollins - Uncut From Israel (2007)

Henry Rollins: Uncut from Israel is a 90-minute special that was taped during Rollins' recent trip to Israel where he performed two nights in Tel Aviv. This special aired before the season premiere of The Henry Rollins Show, kicking of this second season.
"Henry Rollins: Uncut from Israel weaves Rollins' latest spoken-word show in Tel Aviv with documentary footage chronicling his tour around often politically infused locations in Jerusalem including The Wailing Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulcher and The West Bank Security Wall. In this special, Rollins returns to Israel for the first time in ten years with relevant commentary on pop culture, world events and the resilience of the Israeli people. The documentary footage includes candid conversations with world-renowned photojournalist and Israeli native Ziv Korren, who leads Rollins on a personal tour throughout Israel".

Don Bajema, Lydia Lunch, Hubert Selby Jr. & Henry Rollins - Our Fathers Who Aren't In Heaven (1990)

Out of print compilation of spoken word bits from Don Bajema, Lydia Lunch, Hubert Selby Jr. and Henry Rollins. Released on Lydia Lunch's Widowspeak label back in 1990.
The two main Henry Rollins bits can be found on the album Human Butt, the other two appear in written form in his books. But the combination of Rollins, Bajema, Lunch and the great Hubert Selby Jr. makes this a compilation well worth downloading - and/or buying from eBay or Gemm.

All artwork included.

Henry Rollins - Eric the Pilot (1999)

Next up in my campaign to spread the gospel of Henry Rollins is the album Eric the Pilot, recorded in Australia in 1997 - released on 21361 in 1999.
This will probably be the only officially released spoken word album by Rollins that I'll upload, since it's out of print and hard to come by.
"Hilarious and engaging as usual, this release from Rollins is a one-hour story of his adventures with a slightly off-kilter pilot and adventures in the Midwest of America. Like all of his other spoken word releases, it is honest and funny. Definitely for fans of the man's work; it will also entertain anyone who likes a little subversive humor (and doesn't mind profanity)."

Henry Rollins - Rival Hotel, Stockholm 18.01.2005

It took some time, but here's another Henry Rollins spoken word show for your enjoyment!
Back in January 2005 my older brother and I traveled to Stockholm, Sweden to witness the pure genius that is Henry Rollins.
This is (hopefully) the only hard evidence of that trip - a fantastic spoken word show featuring Hank speaking for well over three hours. Recorded on a portable minidisc player - not the best quality recording, but far from the worst.
It's great fun, and well worth downloading!

This is a great show with top notch material and fine sound quality. The total lenght of the show is just over an hour, and the show ends with the fantastic story about when Hank almost killed Bono of U2. Enjoy the show!
